Raleigh, NC - Peace College (4-6, 1-4 USAS) held off a 14-2 surge by the Methodist University Monarchs (6-5, 2-2 USAS) in the second half of tonight's USA South pairing to win their first league game this season 58-55. The run put the visitors within one with just over two minutes remaining in regulation. A poised, young Peace squad regained control to seal the much needed victory in front of a hometown crowd.
The even effort from both teams kept the score close in the first period. First-year Pacer Megan Sherrill scored a sweet backdoor layup on an assist from senior Brenna Mickey in the ninth minute of the game to show the team's offensive progress over the break. Leading scorers Karissa Herring and LeAnne Horne finished the half perfect from the stripe.
Horne knocked in one of three from behind the arc just 16 seconds before intermission to break a late 7-0 run from Methodist and send Peace into the locker room down by just three.
Peace continued to push in the second period, stretching the lead to 13 with just seven minutes remaining. The late Monarch run brought the visitors within reach but Peace settled in to pick up the win.
Horne finished with a season-high 21 points, adding five rebounds and three steals. Herring complimented her teammate with 18 points, adding a team-high seven rebounds. Mickey notched four assists from inside, adding three points and three rebounds.
MU's Dawn Sanderson tallied a team-high 17 points, including 9-13 from the free throw line. Teammate Adriana Wilson topped all with nine rebounds, adding 11 points in the loss.
